Education objectives

1) To have a critical view of the human past together with an understanding of how this conditions the present and the future as well as our perception of both;
2) To reveal an understanding of points of view resulting from different historical antecedents in different cultural and geographical contexts;
3) To be aware of how historical interests, categories and problems alter with time and how historiographical debate is linked to the economic, social, political and cultural interests of each age;
4) To be familiar with the different periods in the History of Portugal;
5) To have general knowledge of the methods, techniques and topics relating to the study of the main periods into which History is normally divided from Pre-history to the present day;
6) To know how to integrate the history of Portugal into a comparative perspective with other spatial and cultural areas;
7) To know how to identify, select and collect, in accordance with the rules of the discipline, a wide variety of sources of information (bibliography, documents, oral and iconographic testimony among others) and to use them critically;
8) To be able to apply acquired knowledge and the ability to understand to a historical topic or to seek an understanding of current world issues;
9) To be able to present both in writing and orally the knowledge acquired using correct History terminology and demonstrating argumentative skills.

Degree pre-requisites

Each student must obtain 180 credits: 132 credits obtained from compulsory courses, 18 credits from programme-restricted electives, and 30 credits from unrestricted electives or a Minor from another academic area. In their 1st year, students should not enrol in more than 30 credits per semester, respecting precedence rules when they have been set. At the beginning of each semester, the students will be advised on which courses to take, according to what best suits their academic requirements.

The degree of ‘Licenciado’ corresponds to Level 6 of the NQF and EQF-National Qualifications Framework/European Qualifications Framework.

Conditions of admittance

Students can be admitted to the Licenciatura Degree in History through the National Call for enrollment in Higher Education, Special Contests, and Special Access Regimes. Additionally, students can gain admission through Readmission or the Change of Institution/Course regime. To apply for higher education through the National Call, students must fulfil the requirements set by the General Directorate of Higher Education (DGES). Evaluation rules

Students are assessed based on the work carried out over a semester, based on class participation, on the presentation of oral and written papers, and tests and exams taken. The results of that assessment are expressed on a scale from 0 to 20. To pass, students must have at least 10 marks. Students who fail, however, have a second chance to retake the final exam. SPECIAL ASSESSMENT REGIMES: - Student-worker - Students with competitive athlete status - Student mothers and fathers - Association leaders - Military personnel - Other special regimes provisioned by law. Students with special educational needs can benefit from teaching and learning conditions adapted to their needs.

Minor at NOVA FCSH - Minimum: 30 ECTS / Maximum: 60 ECTS - Students must select five course units from those offered within the Minor. The selected units must not include any course units that are part of the curriculum of the degree program in which the student is currently enrolled. Additionally, students may select no more than two course units from each of the degree programs offered by other departments participating in the Minor. Complementary (elective) which can be chosen from the 1st cycle options on offer from the Department of History - Minimum: 0 ECTS / Maximum: 30 ECTS.
