Historiography
Objectives
a) To know the conditions of the emergence and diffusion of the different kinds of records about the human past;
b)To know the main historiographical tendencies in the Western, from Antiquity to our days;
c)To know the fundamental bibliography about the subject and to be able to interpret historiographical texts
d) To develop the ability of oral and written communication, with historiographical specific vocabulary and concepts
e) To obtain the acquaintance to continue a deep study on historiography

- Classroom teaching.
- Lectures 60%; practical classes 40%. Practical classes consist of analysing selected texts by historians.
Evaluation method
Continuous assessment - Assessment method: bibliographic notes, reading notes and notes on authors 50%; classroom-based written assessment - 40%; class participation 10%(100%)
Subject matter
1. Problems and themes in the history of historiography: epochs, genres, statutes, history and the historical novel, the idea of peoples ‘without history’?
2. Periods of Western historiography: antiquity, chronicles, rationalist and Enlightenment historiography, the 19th century.
3. Current trends in historiography - key names of the 20th century
4. In-depth study of certain cases, to be defined (examples: Herodotus / Thucydides / Plutarch / Ibn Khaldun / Fernão Lopes / Machiavelli / Voltaire / Condorcet / Vico / Alexandre Herculano / Jules Michelet / Leopold Ranke / Karl Marx / Max Weber / Marc Bloch / Lucien Febvre / E.P.
