Subject matter
This course examines the desire of European unity, highlighting the idea of Europe, addressing in a contextualized approach the conditions where the major movements and organizations within the framework of cooperation arose internationally. The first part of the program studies how the name and idea of Europe appeared, with which assumptions and proposals of cooperation and unification emerged among European countries over the time, understanding the plans and projects that generally appeared until the First World War, analysing the issue of European unification and the projects arising in the period up to World War II and studying in detail the proposals, projects, movements, institutions that were to mark the history of European integration until the Lisbon Treaty. The second part is devoted to the study of the Portuguese thought and of Portugal’s participation in projects and cooperation movements, and the European Integration in the second half of the 20th century.
