History of War in the Middle Ages
Objectives
Focused on the portuguese case (12th to 15th century), but no exclusively, identify and understand the different groups that integrated the medieval armies and the way they were recruited and payed; understand what weapons were used by combatants in the Middle Ages; understand the evolution of military architecture and the different elements of a castle; apprehend which are the main models and strategic options of medieval armies; and what are the main types of military operations practiced in the Middle Ages.

2-The armies: Composition and recruitment (The noble men, the municipal militias; the military orders; other contingents: mercenaries, homiziados and Guard of the King); Dimension and chain of command.
3-Logistics: Armaments and horses.
4-Training and formation of the combatants: Theory and practice.
5-Castles and urban walls: General elements; The Portuguese case: Spatial distribution; architectural elements; construction, repair and conservation.
6-Military operations: The War in the Middle Ages: objectives, constraints, strategy and tactics; chevauchées, siege operations and pitched battles.
7-The scars of war: the landscape of war and the impact on civilians.
