Theoretical lectures are designed toward the understanding of laws and concepts of Physics (Electromagnetism) and their application to the resolution of real problems. In laboratory classes, emphasis is given to the experimental methods of Physics, to metrology and scientific reporting.

Teaching method

The curricular unit is divided into a theoretical component, a problem solving component and a practical part (Laboratory). The theoretical classes will be taught in two weekly sessions (1 h + 1h30) and the problem solving component in one weekly hour.

The practical classes, given in four sessions of two hours, are dedicated to highlight some processes related to electromagnetism with the objective of verifying phenomena and physical processes described in the theoretical classes. They are also used in the handling of "usual" apparatuses (Oscilloscope, multimeter, voltage sources ...).

The practical part is evaluated (30% of the final grade) based on the student''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s performance in class and a brief report delivered at the end of the class. The theoretical evaluation (concepts and resolution of exercises, 70% of the final grade) is evaluated with two tests or with final exam.

Preamble

The teaching structure for Electromagnetism D classes consists of:

In-Person Classes:

- 2.5 hours of theory (1 hour + 1.5 hours, CLIP terminology: Theoretical-In-Person: "T") dedicated to the presentation of the material. Whenever possible, of these 2.5 hours of T, 30 minutes will be dedicated to interactive question-and-answer sessions.

- 1 hour of theoretical-practical (TP; CLIP terminology: "TP") dedicated to solving exercises, each week. TP classes are limited to 51 students. First-time students register and follow a lottery; after a week, students with previous attendance can choose one of the TP classes with available seats. Registration—mandatory—for these TP classes is done at CLIP using the usual lottery rules. Attendance is not mandatory. - 2 hours of practical classes (class of 20 students, CLIP terminology: Practice: "P"). These practical classes are reserved for students who do not attend. This year, 5 assignments will be completed in these classes. Each assignment includes prior preparation, done "at home," for the practical assignment.

 

I- Electromagnetism D  Assessment:

 

• PRACTICAL Component ("Attendance")

- Attendance grades obtained before Electromagnetism D  III within two academic years will be valid. It is the student''s responsibility to verify their attendance status in CLIP. The attendance grade is valid for the year in question and the following year.

- Practical classes are mandatory for students who do not attend.

- In practical classes, 5 practical assignments will be completed in groups of 2 or 3 students, following the dates indicated by the instructors.

- Each practical assignment will be assigned a grade from 0 to 20 based on the student''s performance. Failure to complete a practical assignment will result in a grade of "0." Anyone who anticipates that, for a well-founded reason, they will be unable to attend a class will have to switch classes with a classmate, informing the faculty involved of the change or attend the substitute class held during the last week of classes of the semester.

- The practical component grade, NP, will be calculated by averaging the five reports.

- Passing the practical component will be achieved if NP≥9.50 (NP: "Attendance Grade").

 

• THEORETICAL Component – ​​Tests and Exams

- Assessment for this component is based on three (in-person) 1.5-hour tests administered during the semester (the sum of the scores of the three tests = NT, between 0 and 20 points) and/or a retake exam (grade = NR, between 0 and 20 points).

- Two tests, T1 and T2, will each consist of 20 multiple-choice, "quiz-style" questions, with each question worth one point. The third test, T3, consists of solving problems like those in the series and solved in the practice classes, worth 20 points. The final grade (NT) is given by the expression:

NT=0.4*NT1+0.4*NT2+0.2*NT3

where NT1, NT2, and NT3 are the scores for tests 1, 2, and 3, respectively.

- The retake exam will consist of 20 multiple-choice, "quiz-style" questions, worth 20 points, and problems similar to those in the series and solved in the practice classes, worth 4 points.

 

• PASSING THE ELECTROMAGNETISM D

Students who attended the exam in the years prior to 2024-2025:

- Passed if NT or NR ≥ 9.50 with a final grade = NT or NR.

 

Students who completed their course in 2024-2025 or 2025-2026:

- Approved if (NT≥9.0 or NR ≥9.0) and NP≥9.5 and Final Grade (NF)≥9.5. The final grade is calculated using the expressions NF = 0.7xNT+0.3xNP or 0.7xNR+0.3xNP rounded to the nearest unit. Note that test and report grades are rounded to the nearest tenth, and NT, NR, and lab grades are rounded to the nearest unit.

 

• Grade Improvement

- Students who have passed the course may only improve their grade for the theoretical component. - The final improvement grade is calculated in the same way as the final passing grade.

 


II- Registration for Practical and Theory-Practical Classes - Practical classes (laboratory classes): Each 2-hour block in the schedule corresponds to two practical classes that will alternate practical classes, according to the plan posted at CLIP. Registration for practical classes is mandatory and takes place at CLIP at the beginning of the semester "as usual." In the first in-person practical class, the two practical classes (Px and Py) at the same time will be reminded of the grading rules for this component. At the end of this class, work groups will be formed (2 or 3 students per group). Students absent from the first class will have their registration for the practical shift canceled at CLIP and will be required to re-enroll. At the end of the first class, shift changes may be accepted within the limit of available spaces: students who so desire must attend the session of the desired practical shift. Other cases should be discussed with the faculty. More information on this topic will be provided during the first week of classes. - Theoretical-Practical Classes (exercise classes, "TP"): These classes are limited to 51 students and will be taught in person. This year, students who have achieved attendance in previous years can register for any TP class within the available spaces. These classes are not mandatory, but registration for these classes is mandatory for those who wish to attend. Registration for the classes is done through CLIP "as usual" and will follow the usual lottery rules. Students who do not intend to attend these classes are asked not to register. III. Discipline Rules, Tests, and Exams - Registration for tests, done through CLIP, is mandatory. - Students may only carry with them during the test writing instruments, a ruler, a photo ID, and a "simple" calculator (i.e., not a graphing calculator, not programmable, not capable of storing files that can be considered an aid in solving the test). - Students who cheat on an assessment test will automatically fail and lose their attendance if they have already obtained one. According to FCT regulations, the incident will be reported to the FCT Director. - Further specifications regarding the tests may be announced the week before the test. Other rules - The use of laptops and other electronic devices during practical classes is subject to teacher approval. - Students must bring printed scripts to practical classes. Teachers reserve the right to ask students not to print them. - Punctuality: Students must be present at the class start time. Teachers may refuse entry to students arriving more than 5 minutes late. - In all classes, cell phones must remain turned off and put away until the end of the class. Students should question their course instructors about any inaccuracies in the instructions provided and about any rules that are misunderstood, ambiguous, or missing. Common sense will always prevail. In particular, …just because it''s not explicitly prohibited doesn''t mean it''s authorized…
