Chemical and Biological Engineering
Education objectives
The Master''s Degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering provides an advanced training in chemical and biological process technologies. Students learn to develop, optimize and design innovative and economically competitive chemical and biological processes with a view to their industrial implementation.
Leveraged on a strong tradition, Chemical and Biological Engineering professionals are at the forefront of the challenges for sustainability, in the development and production of clean energy sources, in biodegradable and sustainable materials, in the recycling processes of by-products and waste, in air quality and control of global warming, in the availability and universalization of pharmaceuticals on a planetary scale at an affordable cost.
Why this Master''s?
- Cycle of studies with a high-quality curricular profile, carefully optimized over more than 40 years, focused on decarbonization and sustainability technologies;
- Full employability with a high number of professionals holding top positions in the Portuguese and international economic fabric;
- Strong focus in engineering design training with 18 dedicated ECTS allowing the authorship of Chemical and Biological Engineering projects recognized by the Order of Engineers;
- Strong commitment in the areas of innovation and entrepreneurship for the creation of new businesses with strong penetration in the business fabric, with a portfolio of partnership agreements with more than 70 (multi)national companies, allowing students to develop their master''s dissertation in an industrial environment;
- Cutting edge scientific research of its faculty in the areas of chemical and biological engineering, allowing an excellent alignment between teaching and scientific research;
- Research centre classified as excellent in chemical and biological engineering sciences, opening the opportunity for the student to opt for a career in research and development within the framework of a large number of national and European projects.
Career opportunities
- Energy: petrochemical refining, biorefining and biofuels, development and production of efficient solar panels, batteries and fuel cells for automobiles, hydrogen industry, among others;
- Materials: sustainable polymers and biopolymers, biodegradable plastics and bioplastics, cement industry, paints, glues and varnishes, thermal and acoustic insulating materials, among others;
- Health: Pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry, focusing on the large-scale production of pharmaceuticals (synthetic chemical-based active ingredients) and biopharmaceuticals (bio-based active ingredient, for example vaccines);
- Environment: drinking water collection and treatment; treatment and recovery of wastewater, CO2 sequestration to mitigate global warming or elimination of pollution sources, are just a few examples.

Evaluation rules
The evaluation of all UCs is continuous for all the components that integrate it, and it must be completed by the last day of the school term of the academic semester.
The continuous evaluation of a UC must include a minimum of three elements in the set of evaluation components, on dates adequately spaced throughout the period of classes.
All UCs with a theoretical-practical evaluation component must provide, in addition, a form of evaluation of this component by exam, to be carried out after the period of classes (Examination of Appeal).
All requirements and conditions related to the evaluation of the UC, namely the minimum weights and classifications, if any, of each component, as well as the Frequency conditions, are defined a priori and, mandatorily, published in the Discipline Form.
For each UC, combinations of three evaluation components are allowed: (i) Theoretical-practical evaluation; (ii) Laboratory or project evaluation; (iii) Summative assessment.
The final Dissertation (or Project) involves a public discussion with a Jury.
