Micro and Nanotechnology Engineering
Education objectives
The Master´s Degree in Micro and Nanotechnology Engineering (MEMN) is a multidisciplinary programme offering training in three main areas: Electronics, Biotechnology and Energy, combining engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, management and entrepreneurship.
Over two years, the MEMN prepares students for the forefront of innovation, exploring applied science and disruptive technologies such as transparent and/or flexible (opto)electronics, (nano)biosensors, solar cells and photonics, in clean rooms and various laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for nano/micro-scale manufacturing and advanced characterisation of materials and devices.
With the support of centres of research excellence and various partnerships with institutions and companies around the world, graduates of the Master´s in Micro and Nanotechnologies are qualified for careers in cutting-edge sectors with high employability, such as (micro/nano)electronics, automation, mobility, aerospace, health and sustainable energy.
Taught in Portuguese and English, the programme attracts students of various nationalities who wish to transform their careers.
Why this Master´s?
- Curriculum structure that combines theoretical and practical training in highly relevant and impactful interdisciplinary fields, with a view to maximising students´ career prospects;
- Unique opportunities to gain knowledge and laboratory experience in research and technological development, taking advantage of the state-of-the-art facilities (including two clean rooms) at the CENIMAT|i3N and CEMOP|UNINOVA centres of excellence, internationally recognised as pioneers in the fields of functional materials and sustainable micro/nanotechnologies;
- Wide range of partnerships with institutions and companies in various countries, providing unique opportunities for dissertation projects inside or outside Portugal;
- Possibility of financial support through two types of scholarships available:
- ‘Impulso Mestre’ scholarships (€450) awarded to students enrolled for the first time in the master´s programme with an average grade of 15/20 or higher in their bachelor´s degree.
- Merit Scholarships (€1,250) awarded annually, sponsored by companies and research laboratories, to students with the highest entry grade in the master''''s programme or with the highest average grade from the previous year.
Career opportunities
The programme´s commitment to innovation places students at the forefront of science and technology, so that MEMN graduates are prepared to work in industries of international importance, with broad career prospects and maximum employability rates in sectors such as:
- Electronics (e.g. micro/nanotechnology industries);
- Health and Pharmaceuticals (e.g. Biotechnology industries);
- Energy (e.g. Renewable Technologies and Storage industries);
- Mobility/Transport (e.g. Automotive and Aerospace industries);
- Consulting and management;
- Research and education.

Evaluation rules
The evaluation of all UCs is continuous for all the components that integrate it, and it must be completed by the last day of the school term of the academic semester.
The continuous evaluation of a UC must include a minimum of three elements in the set of evaluation components, on dates adequately spaced throughout the period of classes.
All UCs with a theoretical-practical evaluation component must provide, in addition, a form of evaluation of this component by exam, to be carried out after the period of classes (Examination of Appeal).
All requirements and conditions related to the evaluation of the UC, namely the minimum weights and classifications, if any, of each component, as well as the Frequency conditions, are defined a priori and, mandatorily, published in the Discipline Form.
For each UC, combinations of three evaluation components are allowed: (i) Theoretical-practical evaluation; (ii) Laboratory or project evaluation; (iii) Summative assessment.
The final Dissertation (or Project) involves a public discussion with a Jury.
