Objectives

At the end of this curricular unit (CU) the students will have acquired knowledge, skills and competencies that allow them to work on building technology, for design and construction of new buildings up to the conclusion of all the supporting elements, and the repair and retrofitting of old buildings, mainly in terms of: - Detailed sectional draws of the constitution of the building elements. - Comparative analysis of different possibilities on building elements design, construction. - Choice of the building materials, function of their specificity. - Different constructive elements and functional requirements. - Design of the most efficient building technologies. - De-construction

Teaching method

Online and in-person classes (so the health conditions in the classes taught by the Teacher and in the country allow it).

 The presential classes will facilitate the realization of details in section, by the Students, of the constructive solutions chosen by each one. They cannot be easily replaced by single resolutions presented by the Teacher since each Student can correctly and justifiably arrive at different solutions.

 The choices made by each student and their respective justifications are fundamental for the acquisition of skills.


Evaluation method

The assessment is made with 2 written tests (or 2 individual orals), summative assessment and an assignment
In determining the final grade, each test is worth 35%, the summative assessment is worth 10% and the work is worth 20% (30% in total).
The summative assessment, carried out in class, takes place throughout the semester
The evaluation of the progress of the work is done during the classes; the lack of monitoring of this evolution is reflected in the classification of the work or its admissibility
For approval, it is necessary to obtain a rating in the average of the tests of not less than 9.0 (in 20.0)
In the case of working students who present a written justification at the beginning of the semester or registered as such in the FCT NOVA, the percentage of the summative assessment and the work may be eliminated, with each test being worth 40% or 50%.

Subject matter

Buildings. Construction terminology. Project constitution (written and drawn parts). Functional requirements.

Formworks. Concrete structural in situ elements.

Foundations.

Pillars, beams and slabs. In situ and prefabricated slabs.

Underground walls for earth support vs groundwater level.

Walls. Double leaf walls vs one leaf walls. Prefabricated panels.

Roofs. Terrace roofs vs sloping roofs. Structural elements – horizontal slabs, lightweight structures, self-supporting structures, discontinuous structural elements.

Demolitions and deconstruction. Constructive and demolition residues.

Conception and design. Materials used, differentiation between diverse possibilities to choose, building technologies of the supports vs future coatings.
