Processing and Valorization of Mineral Resources
Objectives
Study the importance of raw materials and its application in society; study the geology and genesis of some raw materials formation, especially those that occur in our country; understand how an exploration may or may not be economically viable; market trends in the sector over the years; studying the raw materials from the mineralogical and chemical viewpoint; studying the raw materials from the point of view of technological and market applications; understand and apply specific test technology, its application and importance in choosing a feedstock; to disseminate some aspects of transformation and exploitation of ornamental rocks.

Teaching method
The teaching method will be theoretical and practical, based on laboratory work and visits to mining operations.
Evaluation method
Laboratory work and technical visits reports: 20%
Individual research work on 2 themes within the scope of the unit with presentation/discussion in class: 30%
Theoretical-practical test + exercise with consultation: 50%
Subject matter
Identification of metallic / non-metallic mineralizations: sample and microscope studies. Minerals of economic interest importance, beneficiation, properties, applications. Mineralogical/petrographic/chemical characterization of industrial rocks. Technological, physical and mechanical properties. Norms. Alteration/alterability studies. Ornamental and industrial rocks and its common applications. Finishing techniques and indications of appropriate use,commercial products.Mineralurgical treatment of mineral substances. Processing (study visits). Introduction to separation methods. Tailings processing,wastewater treatment. Control and mitigation of the environmental impact of these facilities. Market of minerals and industrial and ornamental rocks in Portugal. Reuse of waste from various sources, such as coal burning in thermal power plants, coal waste, mining industry waste, and its processing, in the incorporation of high added value materials processed in the ceramic and cement industry.
