Students are encouraged to regularly consult the textbook selected for the course (Elise Muir, An Introduction to the EU Legal Order, Cambridge University Press, 2023). The classes will generally follow the order of exposition in the textbook. Treaties, legislative materials, and case law are regularly consulted in class
Teaching method
The subject is taught in theoretical-practical classes which are constantly open to student participation, based on the interactive analysis of texts which are compulsory to know and handle (provisions of the law in force, historical texts, case law). In regular practical classes, concrete cases are solved and case law chosen according to its importance is analysed in more detail.
Evaluation method
Evaluation is based on a written assessment consisting of three open questions: two abstract questions on topics discussed during the classes (5 points each), and a hypothetical case to be solved (10 points).
Subject matter
The course explores the constitutional law of the European Union, with the aim of introducing the general functioning of the EU in a clear and accessible way. Five sub-themes are covered: the EU institutions and actors, the system of competences and sources of law, the relationship with the ECHR and national constitutional law, the system of judicial protection and a brief introduction to the main policy areas.
