Bachelor's in Ocean Studies

Education objectives

  1. The Bachelor's Degree in Ocean Studies aims to address the challenges of global sustainability: from climate change to the need for food, from clean energy to the conservation and restoration of biodiversity.
  2. Its interdisciplinary approach offers innovative training in various areas: science, technology, data analysis, economics, management, law, and social sciences.
  3. This interdisciplinary degree results from a partnership between NOVA University Lisbon – including Nova SBE, Nova FCT, Nova FCSH, and Nova IMS – and the University of Algarve and the University of Évora. It also involves the Portuguese Navy’s Hydrographic Institute.
  4. Students are expected to engage with real-world contexts through field trips at sea, starting the degree in the Algarve and ending the first academic year with a week in Sines (University of Evora). This hands-on component, combined with theoretical knowledge, fosters a richer and more robust learning experience.
  5. The Ocean Studies degree contributes to ocean literacy, creating an ecosystem of growth and shared knowledge. The broad scope of subjects and the strong hands-on component are distinguishing features of this program.
  6. Understanding the various activities of the blue economy and their ecological impacts will enable students to grasp the challenges of sustainable ocean use and help develop a shared language to shape public policies related to the sea, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 14, 13, 12).
  7. Broadening horizons by applying knowledge will facilitate lifelong learning with a high degree of autonomy.
