Geospatial Intelligence

Objectivos

Geographic Informaton Systems (GIS) are computer mapping systems with powerful tools that allow users to work with spatial data.

Geographic Information Science (GIScience), the basic research field that seeks to redefine geographic concepts and their use in the context of geographic information systems, examines the impacts of GIS on individuals and society, and the influences of society on GIS.

In this class we will explore both concepts, introducing GIS tools, techniques and applications which students can apply to solve real-world problems and provide solutions.

Exploring the fundamental principle of geography -location-, students will learn how to work with map data to analyse and display geographically referenced information in a GIS software.

By the end of this course it is expected that students will be capable to implement a GIS project autonomously.

Método de ensino

Theoretical classes with debate. Practical classes for solving exercises, clarifying doubts and supporting projects.

The practical sessions correspond to exercises directly related to the content of the theoretical classes.

The practical component will be taught using GIS in a desktop software (ESRI ArcGIS Pro).

ESRI Story Maps (web-based storytelling application) will be used for the presentation of the final GIS group project.

ArcGIS online will be explored in the Cloud.

Método de avaliação

Regular examination period (1st call - continuous evaluation)

Students that opt for continuous evaluation must deliver all requested elements. The non-delivered elements will be graded with 0.

· 2 tests during the semester (25% each)

  • Tests are made during the class
  • 60 min
  • 40 TF and MC questions based on the syllabus and learning materials
  • Each correct answer is worth 2,5%. Each wrong answer is worth -0,5%
  • Individual tests without consultation
  • Tests are in English

· GIS group project (47%)

  • Deliver the report (PDF) by email until 27 December 2020 to jcdavid@novaims.unl.pt
  • Daily delay penalty is -2,5%
  • Check report guidelines for detailed information
  • Each group can have up to 4 elements
  • Presentation of work is done during January
  • The group has 10 minutes to present the work (equally divided by each group member) followed by 5-10 min of Q&A
  • The composition of each group must be communicated until 24 September 2020 to jcdavid@novaims.unl.pt

· ESRI Virtual Campus courses (1.5% each)

Special examination period (2nd phase - non-continuous evaluation)

· 2nd phase exam (100%*)

  • Check the exams calendar for the 2nd phase only (this exam will not take place on the date for the 1 st phase).
  • 90 minutes.
  • 40 TF and MC based on the course syllabus (including Virtual Campus) (50%). Each correct answer is worth 2,5%. Each wrong answer is worth -0,5%.
  • 3 open questions (50%).
  • Individual exams without consultation in English.

* If the student has successfully done the project during the 1st phase, the final grade may be calculated as follows: final project (35%) + final exam (65%). The most favourable situation will be considered.
