Doutoramento em Biologia Integrativa e Biomedicina

Objetivos educativos

A unique opportunity: The IGC PhD programme exposes students to a wide spectrum of different topics in the biological sciences. This reflects the diversity of research themes at our Institute: In House Groups. Unlike traditional programmes, students in our PhD programme are not required (or even encouraged) to choose a laboratory or topic until they have had a semester to discover the Institute's scientific opportunities, and discuss them with their peers, postdocs and PIs. We accept students from diverse backgrounds, including those outside life science disciplines, to join our international research community (40 distinct nationalities and counting).

Requisitos para obtenção do grau ou diploma

First year students take a series of courses, starting in September, covering both basic concepts and cutting-edge research in modern biology. Module topics range from structural and molecular biology to evolution and ecology and are taught by IGC faculty and invited lecturers from top universities and research institutes all over the world. The programme also includes modules in partnership with the Champalimaud Foundation and the University of Cologne/ Max Planck Institute, Cologne. Once the basic lecture modules are concluded, students are free to take advantage of the various workshops and courses at the Institute, as well as advanced training in statistics and bioinformatics.

Choosing a lab: At the end of their first semester, students have several weeks to develop a research proposal for their theses, and to find an IGC principal investigator to supervise their doctoral work. The development of the project is helped by the PhD program Director, as well as by a thesis committee of two IGC researchers, who will then follow the students throughout their PhD.

Condições de acesso

Candidates of any nationality may apply, and there are no age restrictions. We do require a Master's degree from candidates applying from countries within the Bologna agreement region, or those with similar undergraduate programs (3 year programs). Candidates from a Bologna agreement country who received their degree prior to the implementation of the agreement are normally eligible. If you are applying from a country with a 4 or 5-year university degree program, you are also eligible, and should contact the office of the PhD programme for information on their specific case. If the necessary degrees listed above are from non-Portuguese Universities, you must validate them, through the Portuguese State Higher Education Agency - DGES. This validation must be completed before the end of the application period.
