Geospatial Intelligence
Objectivos
Geographic Informaton Systems (GIS) are computer mapping systems with powerful tools that allow users to work with spatial data. Geographic Information Science (GIScience), the basic research field that seeks to redefine geographic concepts and their use in the context of geographic information systems, examines the impacts of GIS on individuals and society, and the influences of society on GIS. In this course we will explore both concepts, introducing GIS tools, techniques and applications which students can apply to solve real-world problems and provide solutions. Exploring the fundamental principle of geography -location-, students will learn how to work with map data to analyze and display geographically referenced information in a GIS software. By the end of this course, it is expected that students will be capable to implement a GIS project autonomously.

Método de ensino
Theoretical-Practical classes with debate, for solving exercises, clarifying doubts and supporting projects.
The practical component correspond to exercises directly related to the content of the theoretical component in the TP classes. The practical component will be taught using GIS in a desktop software (ESRI ArcGIS Pro).
ESRI Story Maps (web-based storytelling application) will be used for the presentation of the final GIS group project.
ArcGIS online will be explored in the Cloud.
Método de avaliação
Regular examination period (1st call - continuous evaluation)
Students that opt for continuous evaluation must deliver all requested elements. The non-delivered elements will be graded with 0.
GIS group project (35%+60%)
- Deliver the report (PDF) by email until 26 December 2021 in the Moodle platform
- Daily delay penalty is -2,5%
- Check report guidelines for detailed information.
- Each group can have up to 4 elements. Presentation of work is done in two phases - 1st phase in week 8, the final phase in January.
- The group has 10 minutes to present the work (equally divided by each group member) followed by 5-10 min of Q&A
- The composition of each group must be communicated until 2 October 2021 to susana.marques@novaims.unl.pt
ESRI Virtual Campus courses (2.5% each)
- Deliver 2 Virtual Campus certificates by email to susana.marques@novaims.unl.pt until 17 October 2021 Select only the free courses available at: https://www.esri.com/training/
Special examination period (2nd phase - non-continuous evaluation)
2nd phase exam (100%)
- Check the exams calendar for the 2nd phase only (this exam will not take place on the date for the 1st phase).
- 90 minutes.
- 40 TF and MC based on the course syllabus. Each correct answer is worth 1,25%. Each wrong answer is worth -0,25% (50%).
- 3 open questions (50%).
- Individual exams without consultation in English.
